Copper thief fatally electrocuted

A man has died in Christchurch after being fatally electrocuted while apparently trying to retrieve copper from a live power transformer.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Brooker Avenue in Burwood’s Red Zone, where emergency services were called to reports of a fire at a power box. Upon arrival, police and fire crews found the man critically injured; he died at the scene.

Christchurch Metro Area Commander Superintendent Lane Todd confirmed inquiries are ongoing, but told media it “appears the man may have been attempting to retrieve copper from the transformer”.

Emergency responders were initially unable to reach him because the transformer remained live; power had to be shut off to the unit and surrounding lines, affecting around 700 homes, before first aid could be rendered.

The death has since been referred to the Coroner. Police are urging anyone who sees suspicious behaviour around electrical infrastructure to contact authorities immediately on 111 and stressed that interference with power equipment poses life‑threatening risks.

Industry groups have also weighed in on the tragedy. The New Zealand Association of Metal Recyclers said the incident was a stark reminder of the hazards of copper theft.

“Attempting to remove copper from active electrical networks carries a very high risk of serious injury or death, and can also disrupt essential services relied upon by the wider community,” the association told Chris Lynch Media.

Electricity Networks Aotearoa warned that copper theft incidents have been rising and are “traumatic” for lines staff who have to respond to such events.

Leaders reiterated that there is no safe way for untrained individuals to interfere with electrical equipment, and urged the public to report suspicious activity rather than risk lives.
