Dubbed the Glandovey Home, it won the Residential New Home over 300sqm Architectural Design Award at the 2018 Architectural Designers New Zealand (ADNZ) Resene Architectural Design Awards. With a soaring pitched roof that runs the length of the house, the Glandovey Home was praised by judges for being an “individualist” but at the same time sitting nicely with its surrounds.
“Its approach from the street is both sympathetic and private, while still providing a grand and alluring entry. Simple forms come together in a considered way, so the pitched roof feels as though it is lightly floating on the darker cedar box of the building.
“This soaring pitched roof is elegantly detailed to flow through the length of the house, providing striking interior and exterior volumes and gently enclosing the spaces below,” said the judges.
Cymon Allfrey Architects also took out the Supreme award for their Family Bach at the ADNZ awards, considered to be one of the most coveted architecture awards in the country.
Architectural Designers New Zealand CEO, Astrid Andersen, said the Glandovey Home, along with Canterbury’s three other award-winning projects, were worthy winners in a hotly contested awards season. “The popularity and appreciation of award-winning architecture in New Zealand has really grown over the last few years.
“With home owners taking greater creative risks and putting more trust in their designers and architects – the resulting architecture is more exciting, interesting and bold. “We only hope that this trend continues and more of our members are given the opportunity to push the boat out and let their creativity take sail.”
